Ramadan is the month when the pace of the Sydney Muslim community shifts. Days quieten. Evenings gather. Every night at sunset, families and communities across the city sit down together to break the fast, and food does more than fill a plate. It marks the moment.
Quick answer
For Ramadan iftar (sunset break fast) gatherings across Sydney, Argentum offers halal empanadas on request as part of catering orders. Party Box (60 empanadas) suits 15 to 20 iftar guests as a substantial course. Corporate Box (100) covers 25 to 33. Order five days ahead to guarantee halal preparation and delivery timing before sunset. Habibi Yalla (Argentinian Lebanese, beef and Middle Eastern spices) is a natural pairing for iftar tables. Patagonia (vegan) and Classic (vegetarian) suit mixed dietary groups.
Ramadan in Sydney
Sydney's Muslim community is one of the most diverse in the world. Lebanese, Turkish, Bangladeshi, Indonesian, Somali, Pakistani, Iranian, Arab Australian and many other backgrounds are all represented across the suburbs, particularly in Auburn, Lakemba, Bankstown, Guildford, Punchbowl and Greenacre, and also throughout the CBD and Eastern Suburbs.
Iftar traditions vary. A Lebanese family iftar looks different from a Bangladeshi one. What is shared is the moment. The sun sets, the fast breaks, dates and water first, then a substantial meal with family or community. Ramadan 2027 falls approximately 8 February to 9 March 2027, with iftar timings shifting by around a minute per day as the season progresses.
Where empanadas fit at iftar
Traditional iftar spreads across most cultures include dates, water or laban, a soup (lentil is universal), fried starters (sambousek, samosa, spring rolls depending on tradition), a main course of rice or meat, and sweets. Empanadas are structurally similar to sambousek and samosa. They are warm, hand held, savoury, and quickly satisfying after a long fast.
Argentum's halal empanadas can slot into an iftar table as:
- A warm starter after dates and soup. One or two per guest, followed by the main course.
- The main protein element for a lighter iftar (three per guest with rice and salad).
- Community event food where a large mixed crowd needs something hand held and low mess.
How the halal preparation works
Argentum's kitchen in Bondi Beach handles halal orders on request. The process:
- Note halal preparation in the order comments at checkout or contact us via the contact form when placing the order.
- Five days notice minimum. This allows the kitchen to source halal certified beef and chicken for your specific order and schedule the production window.
- Beef (Carnivore, Habibi Yalla), chicken (Athlete), and vegetarian (Classic, Patagonia) options are all available halal on request.
- No cross contamination. Halal orders are prepared in a dedicated production window using dedicated tools.
Halal certification of the meat source is available on request for the kitchen partner supply. Contact us if your event requires documentation for community verification.
Menu building by gathering size
| Gathering | Guests | Suggested order | Approximate cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family iftar | 8 to 12 | Family Box ($132) or Party Box ($279 frozen) | $132 to $279 |
| Extended family or friends iftar | 15 to 20 | Party Box baked ($319) plus salad | $319 plus sides |
| Community iftar (small) | 30 to 50 | Two Party Boxes or Corporate Box plus Party Box | $500 to $800 |
| Mosque or community centre iftar | 80 to 150 | Two Corporate Boxes ($998) plus additional Party Boxes | $1,000 to $2,000+ |
Empanadas alone will not carry a full iftar. Position them alongside a main rice or protein dish, salads, and traditional soups and sweets.
Timing delivery around sunset
This is the operational detail that matters most. Iftar timing follows the sunset. In Sydney, iftar falls approximately 5:15 to 5:45 pm in winter Ramadan months and 6:45 to 7:15 pm in summer Ramadan months (Ramadan cycles through the calendar year by roughly 11 days per year).
Delivery target: 30 to 60 minutes before sunset. This gives time for warming in a low oven if needed and for setting the table. We coordinate exact delivery windows on the day of order and can hold delivery on a specific day for guaranteed pre sunset arrival. Book five to seven days ahead for iftar delivery in Sydney's peak Ramadan weeks.
Habibi Yalla flavour spotlight
Habibi Yalla is Argentum's Argentinian Lebanese fusion empanada. Beef with Middle Eastern spices, pomegranate molasses, and toasted pine nuts. The flavour bridges Argentinian and Middle Eastern food traditions and sits naturally on an iftar table alongside kibbeh, sambousek and fattoush. It is a common request for Lebanese and Arab Australian family iftars in the Eastern Suburbs and South West Sydney.
A respectful note on catering for iftar
Ramadan is a spiritual observance, not a food festival. Our role as a caterer is to help you host well, not to shape the religious meaning of the meal. If you are ordering for a mosque or community iftar and want us to coordinate with your event organiser or community liaison, we are happy to. Contact us via the contact form and we will work with you.

FAQ
How is Argentum halal certified?
Argentum's kitchen prepares halal orders on request using halal certified beef and chicken sourced for your specific order. Halal certification documentation for the meat source is available on request.
What is the minimum notice for a halal order?
Five days minimum for halal preparation. Seven days recommended during peak Ramadan weeks. This allows sourcing of halal meat and scheduling of a dedicated production window.
Can you deliver before sunset for iftar?
Yes. We coordinate delivery windows to arrive 30 to 60 minutes before sunset on your chosen day. Confirm exact iftar time at your Sydney suburb when ordering.
What are the kid friendly options at iftar?
Classic (three cheese) and Athlete (chicken) are the mildest flavours and suit most kids. A Family Box (40 empanadas) mixed across these plus one or two other flavours works well for a family iftar with children.
What vegetarian and vegan options do you have for iftar?
Patagonia is fully vegan (roasted vegetables, chimichurri, tofu). Classic is vegetarian (three cheeses, caramelised onion). Both are suitable for guests who are not eating meat during Ramadan for personal or health reasons.
What is in the Habibi Yalla empanada?
Beef with Middle Eastern spices, pomegranate molasses, and toasted pine nuts. Argentinian Lebanese fusion. Halal on request.
Can I order for suhoor (pre dawn meal)?
Suhoor is typically eaten between 3am and 5am, which is outside our delivery window. However, you can order the day before, keep frozen or refrigerated, and warm at suhoor time. Family Box or Chef's Box frozen works well for this.
Do you deliver to community centres and mosques?
Yes. We deliver to community centres, mosques and event halls across Sydney. Coordinate with your venue's event contact for delivery access and timing. Larger orders (Corporate Box scale) need seven days notice for community events.
