A wake doesn't need showy food. It needs warm, simple, and enough for everyone. Here's what we've learned catering wakes across Sydney.
Quick answer
For wakes and memorial gatherings across Sydney (10 to 100 mourners), Argentum provides catering that's warm, simple, and doesn't require serving equipment. Party Box (60 empanadas) suits 15 to 20 mourners. Corporate Box (100) covers 25 to 33. Delivery to homes, community halls, church halls, or funeral parlour reception rooms. 48 hours notice is standard. We'll prioritise your order given the circumstances.
A note before you read further
My name is Pedro. I run Argentum's kitchen in Bondi. Over the years we've catered wakes across Sydney, and this article is what I wish more families knew before making the call. It's practical because the practical part is often what nobody has bandwidth for. If you'd rather just talk it through, the contact form reaches me directly and I'll call you back within a few hours.
Why the food shouldn't be the focus
At a wake, most people don't want to talk about the food. They want it to be there, to be enough, and to not require any thought. The families I've worked with consistently tell me the same thing after: we didn't want to have to explain anything, or serve anything, or clean anything up. We just wanted people fed.
Empanadas suit that context better than a lot of catering formats. Guests pick one up, eat it standing or sitting, and put the napkin in a bin. No plates. No cutlery. No serving spoons. No lids to pop. No family member conscripted into hosting duty when they should be receiving condolences.
Warm comfort food, without staff
The practical brief for wake catering is narrower than a party. It's:
- Warm, comforting food that reads as a meal, not a canape.
- Portable to a home, church hall, RSL club, or funeral home reception.
- No requirement for wait staff or chef presence.
- Dietary-flexible so nobody in the room feels excluded.
- Able to sit on a table for 2 to 3 hours without wilting.
Argentum delivers all of the above. Empanadas arrive baked and warm in insulated boxes, they hold on a platter without collapsing, and mourners help themselves without anyone playing host.
Menu by attendance
| Gathering size | Recommended order | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 10 to 20 (small family gathering) | Family Box + Chef's Box | 50 empanadas total, mix of all flavours. Grief tends to reduce appetite, so 2 to 3 per mourner is realistic. |
| 20 to 40 (standard wake) | Party Box + Chef's Box | 80 empanadas. Enough for one round and a top-up. |
| 40 to 100 (large service afterparty) | 2 to 3 Corporate Boxes | 200 to 300 empanadas. Multiple service points if the hall is large. |
| 100+ | Custom quote via contact form | We'll work with you on flavour mix, delivery windows, and any staffing you may want. |
Guests at wakes typically eat less than at a party. Grief reduces appetite. Older mourners often eat one or two pieces. Younger family and close friends might eat three or four. The numbers above assume that mix.
What not to worry about
Families I've worked with often over-think the menu at this moment. A few things to let go of:
- Variety. All 5 flavours in one box is enough. You don't need 4 separate caterers.
- Presentation. Empanadas on a wooden board or plain platter is right. Elaborate plating feels off.
- Impressive food. This isn't a dinner party. Comfort matters more than sophistication.
- Timing precision. Empanadas are warm for 90 minutes after delivery, still good at room temperature after that. If the service runs long, the food waits.
Timing and location
Most Sydney wakes we cater run 1 to 2 hours after the service. Food landing 30 minutes before mourners arrive gives you buffer. Common delivery locations we cover:
- Family home (most common).
- Church halls (Catholic, Anglican, Uniting, Greek Orthodox).
- RSL and community clubs across Sydney.
- Funeral parlour reception rooms.
- Marquees or private garden setups.
Tell us the venue at ordering. If it's a hall with restricted access, share the venue coordinator's contact so we can coordinate directly and not disturb the family.
Payment
Wake catering can be paid on invoice with 14 days terms, so grieving families aren't dealing with card transactions during the arrangement. Card payment at ordering is also fine. Whatever eases the load.
If you want us to invoice a specific family member, a funeral director, or a solicitor's estate account, tell us at ordering and we'll put the invoice in the right name.
Dietary flexibility
Wakes gather mixed groups: elderly relatives, young cousins, in-laws with dietary requirements, close friends across cultures. The Argentum box covers most of that in one delivery.
- Vegan: Patagonia (mushroom, spinach, onion).
- Vegetarian: Classic (three cheeses) and Patagonia.
- Halal option: Available on request for large orders with notice.
- Nut-free: Five of five flavours are nut-free. Habibi Yalla contains pine nuts.
- Gluten: All flavours contain wheat pastry. Not gluten-free for standard orders.
FAQ
How much food per mourner at a wake?
Two to three empanadas per person is realistic. Grief reduces appetite. Elderly mourners often eat one or two pieces. Order slightly under a full-appetite party count.
Can you deliver on short notice?
Standard notice is 48 hours. For wakes, we'll try to accommodate 24 hours notice where possible. Call or use the contact form and we'll do what we can.
Home wake vs venue wake, does the order differ?
The food is the same. Home wakes usually have less serving infrastructure, so the no-cutlery format matters more. Venue wakes may have kitchen access if you want the frozen option to reheat.
How do you handle dietary requirements?
All 5 flavours in one box covers vegan, vegetarian, meat-eater, and pescatarian (via vegetarian) in one order. Halal option available for large orders with notice. Nut-avoidance possible by excluding Habibi Yalla.
Is empanada right for a wake, or is it too casual?
Empanadas suit the tone of a modern Sydney wake, which tends to be less formal than a generation ago. If your family expects three-course seated catering, we're not the fit. If your family wants substantial warm food that guests can eat without ceremony, we are.
Payment options?
Invoice with 14 days terms or card at ordering. We can invoice a nominated family member, funeral director, or estate solicitor's office directly.
What if the service time changes?
Tell us as soon as you know. We can shift delivery by an hour or two within the day at no cost. Same-day cancellation is charged at 50%.
Do you send a sympathy card with the order?
No printed card, but we won't include marketing material or a promotional invoice on the packaging. Just food, insulated, discreetly delivered.
