The Athlete is Argentum's free-range chicken empanada with lemon, onion, capsicum, garlic, green olives, curry and mozzarella, made in Bondi Beach and delivered frozen across Sydney. Lighter than the beef, still properly satisfying. Bake at home from frozen at 190°C for 18 to 22 minutes.

Pack of twelve Athlete empanadas. Pulled free-range chicken with mozzarella, onion, red capsicum, garlic, green olives, lemon, and a whisper of curry. Lighter than the beef, still properly satisfying.

Made in our Bondi Beach kitchen and frozen fresh to lock in flavour. Classic Argentinian half-moon shape with a zig-zag repulgue seal. No thawing needed.

How to bake:
Bake from frozen at 190°C for 18 to 22 minutes, until golden and crisp.

Optional finish:
For extra colour and shine, lightly brush the empanadas with egg yolk before baking.

Clean protein, real flavour. Popular with anyone who trains, and anyone who doesn't.

Why the Athlete works so well

The Athlete is what happens when a proper chicken empanada is built for someone who cares about what they eat. Free-range chicken is pulled, not diced, then folded with mozzarella, red capsicum, onion, garlic, green olives, a squeeze of lemon and a whisper of curry powder. The curry is barely there. It just lifts the chicken. No heat, no big spice moment.

It is the flavour we hand people when they say "I don't really eat beef." It is also the one runners and triathlon crowds keep coming back to. Clean protein, real filling, no seed oils.

What is inside

Free-range chicken, mozzarella, onion, red capsicum, garlic, green olives, lemon and a whisper of curry powder, folded in a soft wheat pastry. Contains wheat gluten and dairy (mozzarella).

What to drink with it

Style Pick Why it works
Wine Argentinian Torrontés Floral and dry, the classic Salta match for chicken empanadas.
Beer Quilmes lager or a light Sydney pilsner Crisp and clean, keeps the chicken bright.
Non-alcoholic Yerba mate, or sparkling water with lemon Mate is the Argentinian everyday drink for exactly this.
Sauce Pedro's Chimichurri (jar, sold separately) The herby vinegar bite works on chicken too.

When to serve it

Occasion How to plate it
Work lunch Bake two, pack in a lunch box, take to the desk.
Post-workout meal Three empanadas, side of leafy greens, hits the protein target fast.
Hens or bridal shower Full pack cut in halves, served as finger food with Torrontés.
Mixed-dietary catering Pair with the Classic and Patagonia to cover meat, veg and vegan.

How many it feeds

Twelve empanadas feed 3 to 4 people as a full meal (three per person) or 4 to 5 people as finger food. For larger groups, look at the Chef's Box ($85) or the Weekly Family Box ($132).

Bake reminder

Straight from freezer to a preheated oven at 190°C for 18 to 22 minutes. Brush with egg yolk before baking if you want a deeper golden finish.

Frequently asked

Are the olives green or black?

Green. Pitted, chopped, folded through the filling. The lemon lift is part of the same note.

Is it spicy?

No. The curry is a whisper, not a hit. Safe for adults and kids who do not want heat.

Is it halal?

Not by default. The chicken is free range but not halal-certified. For halal chicken, we can quote it on a catering order.

Does it contain gluten or dairy?

Contains wheat gluten in the pastry and dairy from the mozzarella. Not suitable for coeliacs or dairy-free diets. Gluten-free is only available for large catering orders with a week's notice.

Can I refreeze after baking?

We do not recommend it. Baked empanadas are best eaten the same day, or refrigerated and reheated once at 180°C for 6 to 8 minutes.

How long do they keep in the freezer?

Six months from delivery when kept at 18 degrees below zero or colder.

Is the chicken really free range?

Yes. Sourced from an Australian free-range supplier. We do not buy caged chicken.

Started an asado with friends and decided to open with a few boxes from Argentum. Best decision we made. The Carnivore was the standout, everyone agreed.

Ordered for a picnic with friends, the Carnivore is my favourite. Would highly recommend.
Lisa de Rooij Carnivore
I used to grab a pie from the bakery, but Argentum has completely replaced that for me. Lighter dough, premium fillings, baked not fried. Way more flavour.
